Add us as a preferred source on Google »Tom Felton is reprising his role of Draco Malfoy in the Broadway production of Harry Potter: The Cursed Child.
Starring in the famous franchise, Felton was known for his portrayal of Draco Malfoy, Harry Potter’s bully.
The actor has been hit with waves of backlash over his controversial decision.
Many fans have cut ties with the franchise due to author J.K. Rowling's transphobic views.
According to reports, Tom Felton said:
“Being a part of the Harry Potter films has been one of the greatest honours of my life.”
“Joining this production will be a full-circle moment for me because when I begin performances in Cursed Child this fall, I’ll also be the exact age Draco is in the play.”
People are calling out the actor due to the boycott of J.K. Rowling's work because of her transphobic views.
In response to the announcement, one person wrote on X:
"reminder that jk rowling has openly stated she uses her royalties from these things to directly fund transphobia. its time for y’all to finally grow out of your nostalgia and find a new book to read."
Another said:
"this is why everything she touches should be boycotted. it's not about death of the author, it's about JKR using her considerable fortune to fund anti-trans organizations. it's way past time to let go of harry potter"
“literally every harry potter actor from the original series has moved on with their lives and starred in new things yet tom felton is reprising his role as draco malfoy and is putting more money into jkr’s pockets”, wrote a third.
Celebrities have also called out J.K. Rowling's transphobia, such as Nicola Coughlan.
When the court ruled that transgender women were not to be included under the definition of ‘woman’ under the Equality Act of 2010 in the UK, the Harry Potter author posted to social media, seen smoking a cigar with the caption: “I love it when a plan comes together.”
Nicola shared an article calling Ms Rowling’s reaction ‘a new low’.
Additionally, she slammed the upcoming HBO Harry Potter remake, commenting:
“Keep your new Harry Potter lads. Wouldn’t touch it with a ten-foot pole.”
