‘There will be tears’: Kate Garraway says husband could be in a coma for a year due to #Covid-19

"He has fought the most extraordinary battle."

Kate Garraway has said that her husband could remain in a coma for one year following his battle with coronavirus.

The presenter's husband, Derek Draper, contracted Covid-19 two months ago. He was admitted to intensive care and has since entered into a coma. 

Speaking on Good Morning Britain this morning, Garraway said that they "don't know" if Derek will survive the damage the virus has done to his body. "There will be tears, I'll try to keep them down," she said during today's emotive interview. "He's still with us, he has fought the most extraordinary battle, the fact that he's still here and holding on.

"I am so grateful that he's still here, and I've got the option of praying while others have lost that. He's very, very sick (...) It has affected him from the top of his head to the tip of his toes."

Garraway said that her husband was "begging" her to let him go into a coma due to the pain he was experiencing.

"He said 'I can't take this, I feel like I'm suffocating.' He said 'Please let them put me in a coma' and they didn't want to do that.

"On Sunday they said: 'We're going to put him in a coma, we think we have to do that.' He said: 'I love you, I'm sorry I have to leave you, you've saved my life.'"

"He said: 'Being married to you, the children, you saved my life.'"

Garraway and Draper married in 2005. They welcomed their first child, a daughter, in 2006, and their second child, a son, in 2009. Draper, a former adviser and lobbyist, did not have any underlying health conditions. Garraway said that doctors do not know why the virus affected him so significantly.
