Adriana Smith’s life support switched off after son’s delivery

Smith was kept on life support despite being declared brain dead in February. This was due to the abortion laws in the state of Georgia.

The expectant mother was kept on life support machines until doctors could deliver her unborn baby.

Smith attended hospital with a severe headache in February, but was sent home with medication. She woke up struggling to breathe the following day and was taken to Emory University Hospital.

Doctors confirmed she had brain clots, and she was sadly declared brain dead.

However, doctors told her family they had to keep her on life support because she was eight weeks pregnant.

They claimed they had to keep her on life support due to the abortion laws in Georgia. The state bans abortion after around six weeks into a woman's pregnancy, when cardiac activity can be detected.

Her baby boy, who is only 28 weeks, was delivered by doctors on Friday.

Speaking to local TV station 11 Alive, Smith's mother, April Newkirk, said her grandson is "fighting."

It is believed the infant weighed only 1lb 13oz. He has been named Chance and is being cared for in the NICU.

She told the publication, "He's expected to be OK. He's just fighting. We just want prayers for him."

Doctors turned off Adriana Smith's life support on Tuesday

Adriana Smith was a beloved nurse and mother to a seven-year-old son.

"It's hard to process. I'm her mother. I shouldn't be burying my daughter. My daughter should be burying me," her mother added.

There has been immense uproar after her story made headlines across the world. The abortion law in Georgia has come under fire, with many slating the hospital for treating the mother like a human incubator.

Smith's mother said all women should have a choice when it comes to body autonomy.

She also said the medical team should have given Smith's family a choice in this situation.

"I’m not saying we would have chosen to terminate her pregnancy. But I’m saying we should have had a choice."

"I think all women should have a choice about their body. And I think I want people to know that.”
