Add us as a preferred source on Google »The National Transport Authority has launched a new free travel scheme for children aged from five to eight.
The new Child 5–8 Leap Card gives children free access to public transport across the TFI network.
Around 263,000 children across Ireland are now eligible for this expanded travel scheme, which they can use right up to their 9th birthdays.
Families will be able to apply for the card from today, via the online portal at leapcard.ie
This new TFI Leap Card marks a significant expansion of Ireland’s free travel policy for children.
While those under five already travel free without a card, children aged five to eight using the new TFI Leap Card will now avail of the same benefit.
The card covers all TFI public transport services, including Dublin Bus, Bus Éireann, Go-Ahead Ireland, Iarnród Éireann, and LUAS.
This initiative, first announced in Budget 2025, is a key step in supporting families by reducing transport costs and promoting early adoption of sustainable travel habits.
It also reflects the NTA’s commitment to making public transport more accessible, inclusive, and affordable.
Speaking on the initiative, Minister Darragh O’Brien said: “This initiative delivers on the clear commitment in the Programme for Government to make public transport more affordable and accessible for families.
He added, "This practical and meaningful step supports parents and guardians in their everyday routines, and also contributes to our broader goals of reducing emissions, improving connectivity, and creating a more sustainable transport network for the future.”
