A man was left in critical condition after suspected spider bite

Sadly, it’s probably the last time he’ll be walking around carefree and barefoot.

A man who was walking through grassland in Skegness, Lincolnshire, found himself in a rather grim situation just hours after his outing. Many of us have been through our fair share of spider scares around the house, but those fits of panic and fear surely can't compare to this. The man who was walking barefoot felt a sharp pain in the sole of his foot which eventually caused it to swell. According to the Telegraph, his friend Kim Needham said in a Facebook post that it had left him in “critical condition” and fighting for his life. She said,

“… as he was walking around barefoot on grass, he felt a sharp pain like he’d stood on a twig… Two hours later his foot had swollen massively and was in severe pain…They don’t know what bit him but have mentioned a spider. This post isn’t to scare anyone but please make sure you and your children have something on their feet at all times.”

Her friend was rushed to Boston Pilgrim Hospital where thankfully doctors managed to get the sting out of his skin which brought him to a stable condition. According to Lincolnshire Live, a wildlife expert added some reassurance to the story for the rest of us. It was said that spiders indigenous to the country don’t possess the venom that can cause serious harm to humans, and that this could have been instead an allergic reaction. Surely this includes Ireland too, right? So if you do find yourself in a similar predicament, seek help and medical assistance as soon as possible, and remember to wear your shoes and long trousers through woodlands and grasslands as there are plenty of creepy crawlies scurrying about.
